Albania`s progress in recent years in respecting and promoting gender equality is reflected in a series of international commitments as well as in its domestic legal and policy framework. Since 2008, Albania adopted a series of normative and policy frameworks to achive gender equality and eradicate gender based and domestic violence. In 2010 the CEDAW Commitee reviewed Albania`s periodic report on implementation of the UN Convention and in December 2011,Albania signed the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.Under the framework of the new Programme of Cooperation (PoC) 2012-2016 between the Government of Albania and the United Nations,UN Women in coordination with other UN agencies has planned to implement actio taken at national and local level to implement improved legislative and policy framework on combating gender-based violence. Following the GoA signature of the new Council of Europe (CoE) Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, in 2012, UN Women will support the GoA to ratify the Convention by developing a "road map" including relevant costs of service,systems and infrastructure required by the Convention. Also at the request of the Government of Albania UN Women will lunch the Critical Service Initiative to strengthen the understanding and assessment of whether all women and girls in need of such services have ready access. A part of these efforts, UN Women is issuing a Request for Proposal (RfP) to support initiatives of organizations and/or institutions aiming at addresing violence against women, thus reinforcing the state`s institutions response to domestic violence.
